Spelman College is a private, historically African American college for women. The college enrolls some 2,200 students from more than 40 states in the US and 15 countries. It offers majors in areas such as English, economics, mathematics, music, psychology, art, and religion. Spelman was founded in 1881 as Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary by Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles. The school's name was changed in 1884 to honor Mrs. Laura Spelman Rockefeller, as well as her parents Harvey Buel and Lucy Henry Spelman, activists involved in the antislavery movement.
