The consortium was founded in 2004 to buy a controlling stake in the real estate developer (a prize it fought Canadian firm Brascan, now Brookfield Asset Management ). Songbird's lead investors include Morgan Stanley , British Land , SAP co-founder Hasso Plattner, and Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. In 2009, investment companies from Qatar and China backed the troubled company to help it pay some £800 million in debt.
