Smith International is anything but anonymous for oil and gas producers. The company, which was acquired by oil services titan Schlumberger in an $11 billion transaction in August 2010, makes premium drill bits, drilling fluids, and related products and, via its Smith Bits unit, offers drilling-related services. Prior to the 2010 acquisition its M-I unit sold fluids used to cool and lubricate drill bits and prevent pipes from clogging; it mined some of the barite and bentonite used to make drilling fluids. The Wilson business provided pipes and fittings, tools, and maintenance and janitorial supplies. Smith Oilfield provided drilling equipment and drilling and completion services.
