Started in 2000 as an offshoot of liquidator Gordon Brothers Group , SmartBargains is a giant electronic bargain bin, offering products, from apparel to home improvement items to luggage, at grossly reduced rates, often at costs up to 70% lower than retail. One of the few survivors of the dot-com bubble burst and operating only through its Web site, the company is a clearing house for closeouts and odd lots. SmartBargains.com is a division of Retail Convergence, Inc., a collection of e-commerce companies based in Boston. Retail Convergence acquired SmartBargains in 2008 for $25 million.
