In 1858 a group of Catholic sisters arrived in Kansas, then still a territory, and began teaching and tending the sick. In 1864 the sisters opened a private hospital, establishing the foundation for what would eventually be the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System (SCLHS). Today, the not-for-profit health care organization operates nearly a dozen hospitals and four clinics located in California, Colorado, Kansas, and Montana, with a total of about 2,500 beds. Its facilities include acute care, extended care, and rehabilitation services. True to its name, the organization continues to provide health services to low-income and uninsured people by operating safety net facilities in some regions.
