Shanachie Entertainment began as a record label specializing in Irish folk music; its name is a simplified spelling of the Irish word for "traveling bard." The label eventually expanded into jazz, reggae, blues, folk, rock, and other genres, and it has released records by artists such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Clannad, Sara Hickman, and Solas. Shanachie Entertainment has remained independent since its founding in a Bronx apartment in 1975 by musicologist Richard Nevins and musician Dan Collin.
