This Seminole is not only a native Floridian, but it has also provided electricity in the state since 1948. Seminole Electric Cooperative generates and transmits electricity for 10 member distribution cooperatives that serve 1.7 million residential and business customers (848,274 meters in 2010) in 45 Florida counties. Seminole Electric has more than 2,120 MW of primarily coal-fired generating capacity (but with some natural gas and nuclear power generation, too). The cooperative also buys electricity from other utilities and independent power producers, and it owns 350 miles of transmission lines. Some 90% of its power load uses the transmission systems of other utilities through long-term contracts.
