The company sells its wares through its own Web site and mail-order catalog; some products are also sold through bookstores and mass merchandisers. James and Joan Hoffman started the company as The School Zone Learning Center, a retail teachers' supply outlet, in 1972. The company began publishing workbooks and changed its name to School Zone Publishing Company in 1979.
