The company processes scrap steel and iron, which it obtains from sources such as auto salvage yards, industrial manufacturers, and metals brokers. The company sells more of that scrap to steelmakers in Asia than anywhere else; much of the rest goes to Schnitzer Steel's own steelmaking business, Cascade Steel Rolling Mills, which produces merchant bar, steel reinforcing bar, and other products at its minimill in Oregon.
