Save-A-Lot Food Stores is growing a lot because its customers don't have to pay a lot. The extreme-value grocery chain operates more than 1,175 stores in about 40 states under the Save-A-Lot banner. About 75% of the stores are licensed; the rest are company owned and operated. Save-A-Lot stores offer a limited assortment of items (about 1,400 of the most frequently-purchased grocery products) at prices up to 40% lower than conventional grocery stores. The company has sold its Deal$ - Nothing Over A Dollar chain of stores, acquired in 2002, to Dollar Tree. Founded in 1978 by William Moran, today Save-A-Lot is a subsidiary of grocery retailer and wholesaler SUPERVALU, which bought the company in 1993. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for Save-A-Lot Food Stores, Inc.
Population growth and consumer tastes drive demand. Because margins are low, the profitability of individual companies depends on high volume sales and efficient operations. Large companies can offer a wide selection of products and have advantages in purchasing, distribution, marketing, and finance. Small companies can compete effectively by offering specialty products, serving a local market, or providing superior customer service. Discount stores and warehouse clubs have aggressively pursued the retail grocery market, and Wal-Mart is the largest seller of groceries in the US. Other competition includes specialty food stores, convenience stores, drugstores, dollar stores, and, to some degree, restaurants. To read the full description, subscribe now.
