Santarus targets more than a little tummy ache. The company's flagship drug Zegerid is a modified version of omeprazole, the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) found in AstraZeneca's best-selling Prilosec. Zegerid (in capsule and powder form) differs from other omeprazole formulations with its immediate, rather than delayed, release. It has been approved by the FDA to treat upper gastrointestinal disorders, including gastric ulcers, heartburn, and bleeding. The firm has an in-house sales force and a contract sales team with inVentiv that market prescription Zegerid to gastroenterologists in the US.
