Sanderson Farms has steadily scratched its way up the pecking order of poultry processors. The company sells fresh, chill-pack, and frozen chicken in whole, cut-up, and boneless forms under the Sanderson Farms label. Its customers include food retailers, distributors, restaurants, and other foodservice operators located mainly in the southeastern, southwestern, northeastern, and western US. In addition to buying chicks from about 180 breeders, the company maintains its own breeder flocks and contracts with about 550 independent chicken farmers, who raise the chicks for Sanderson.
