SUPERVALU is feeling pretty super following the acquisition of more than 1,100 supermarkets from fallen grocery giant Albertsons. Its purchase of the Albertsons' stores catapulted the chain to second place in the traditional grocery retail market (behind Kroger) with about 4,290 stores in some 40 US states. (It has since relinquished the #2 spot to Safeway.) The deal added half a dozen new banners, including Albertsons, Acme Markets, and Shaw's, to SUPERVALU's roster of stores (which includes Jewel-Osco, Cub Foods, Save-A-Lot, and Shop 'n Save). The company is also one of the nation's largest food wholesalers, supplying some 2,000 grocery stores nationwide with brand-name and private-label goods.
