ST-Ericsson (formerly ST-NXP Wireless) is the offspring of leading chip makers STMicroelectronics and NXP. The joint venture was formed in 2008 and combined each company's product lines in mobile and wireless semiconductors. ST-Ericsson makes radio-frequency (RF) transceivers; Universal Serial Bus and ultrawideband devices; power management units to extend battery life; chips for for Bluetooth, wireless LAN, Global Positioning System (GPS), and FM radio applications; and microprocessors with multimedia applications that allow cell phones to play music, take pictures, and record video. The company supplies its chips to Samsung, Nokia, LG, Sharp, Sony Ericsson, and major Chinese mobile phone companies.
