One man's trash is SP Newsprint's treasure. The company uses primarily recovered paper to make a living. At full production, SP Newsprint has the capacity to manufacture about one million tons of recycled newsprint annually. The company owns two mills in the US, and 23 recycling plants through its subsidiary SP Recycling Corp. (SPRC). SPRC supplies most SP Newsprint's needs for raw material -- recovered fiber and wood chips. SP Newsprint's mill in Dublin, Georgia, consumes 100% recycled paper, no new pulp, whereas its mill in Newberg, Oregon uses 40% to 55% recycled paper. The rolls of recycled newsprint are sold to McClatchy, and other newspaper publishers. SP Newsprint is owned by White Birch PaperTo read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for SP Newsprint Co.
Demand depends on both consumer and business use of paper products. The profitability of individual companies depends largely on production efficiency. Mills owned by large paper companies have advantages by being vertically integrated; the parent corporation may own timber farms, sawmills, pulp and paper mills, conversion plants, and other end-product manufacturing facilities. Small mills can compete successfully in regional markets, in close proximity to timber sources or customers. Mills are highly automated and capital-intensive: average annual revenue per employee is about $450,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
