The SPDR Trust, Series 1 is a unit investment trust that issues Standard & Poor's Depositary Receipts (SPDRs, or "spiders"), which are exchange-traded tracking stocks for the Standard & Poor's 500 Composite Stock Price Index (the S&P 500), consisting of the US's largest companies. The trust owns shares of all 500 firms, with its holdings in individual companies roughly proportionate to their market capitalizations in an effort to replicate the S&P 500's price and performance.
