SJM Holdings is the largest casino operator (in terms of gaming revenue) in Macau, a former Portuguese colony and the only place where gambling is legal in China; the Macau gaming market is bigger than Atlantic City and the Las Vegas Strip combined. SJM Holdings owns 19 of Macau's 29 casinos and controls nearly 30% of the market. Once the only player in Macau, the firm is dealing with competition from US companies who are expanding into China; SJM is spending some some $1.5 billion rebuilding its flagship Casino Lisboa. Business tycoon Stanley Ho (dubbed "the casino king of Macau") owns SJM Holdings.
