Hip-hop pioneer and Rush Communications founder Russell Simmons (whose nickname is Rush) is in a hurry to communicate. One of the largest African-American-owned media firms, Rush Communications continues to draw on its roots in hip-hop and rap, targeting young consumers through hip-hop culture. In 1983 Simmons formed Def Jam Recordings, the core of Rush, which launched the careers of the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and Run-DMC. Rush sold Def Jam to Universal Music to focus on marketing communication and media activities such as Simmons Lathan Media Group, producer of Run's House, Def Poetry, and Def Comedy Jam. In addition, the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation brings arts education to inner-city kids.
