Company Description
Rio Tinto Minerals finds, mines, and processes industrial minerals such as borates and titanium dioxide. The division of Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto was formed in 2006 following the merging of Rio Tinto subsidiaries U. S. Borax and Luzenac. The division supplies nearly 50% of the world's refined borates (used in everything from glass to fertilizers to wood preservatives). It also supplies titanium dioxide feedstocks and lithium. Rio Tinto sold its talc business in 2011 to Imerys for $340 million, but re-entered the potash business that year through a joint venture exploration agreement in Saskatchewan, Canada, with North Atlantic Potash, a division of Russian fertilizer producer Acron.
