Company Description

RAG is no ragtag operation. The company is Germany's largest coal producer, its mining operations managed through coal and coke company Deutsche Steinkohle. RAG operates seven coal mines and a coking facility, all in Germany. After several years of restructuring, the company has pared down significantly to just the coal operations. It is now controlled by the state-run RAG Foundation. In 2007 the German government announced that conditions in the country -- both economic and environmental -- made continuation of coal mining infeasible. And so the German coal industry will cease operations by 2018.
