Port of Houston AuthorityHouston, TX United States
Company Description
Houston is too far inland to be a port city by the strictest of definitions, but don't try to tell that to the Port of Houston Authority. The agency manages the Port of Houston complex, including the Barbours Cut Container Terminal, one of the busiest in the US. Port of Houston facilities are arrayed along the Houston Ship Channel, which connects Houston with Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico and with intracoastal waterways. The Port of Houston Authority itself operates more than 40 cargo wharves; however, most of the terminal facilities along the ship channel are managed by private companies. The ship channel was opened in 1914; the Port of Houston Authority was created by the Texas Legislature in 1927.
