Plains Exploration and Production has ventured beyond the plains to explore for oil and gas. A former subsidiary of Plains Resources, the company targets offshore fields as well as onshore areas for acquiring, developing, and producing oil and gas. It operates primarily in the Los Angeles and San Joaquin Basins of California, the Santa Maria Basin offshore California, the Gulf Coast region, and the Gulf of Mexico. It also has assets in the Rockies and in the Mid-Continent.
