Company Description

Pilot offers a salve to those suffering from white-line fever. Its Pilot Flying J, a joint venture between Pilot and CVC Capital Partners, runs more than 550 truck stops and convenience stores across North America. Its truck stops feature restaurant chains, such as Subway, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, and offer hot showers. Pilot has fuel islands large enough to service several 18-wheelers. Pilot Truck Care Centers provide TLC (tender loving care) for big rigs, while some 45 Pilot Food Marts (all in Tennessee) keep drivers fed. James Haslam II got Pilot off the ground in 1958 as a gas station that sold cigarettes and soft drinks; now his son, CEO James Haslam III, runs the firm. The Haslam family owns the company.
