You may think that Mother Nature engineers wood, but Pfleiderer begs to differ. The German firm makes engineered wood including particle board, wood panels, and laminate flooring through three divisions: North America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe. Pfleiderer sells its products to furniture makers and building supply stores in 40 countries; Germany accounts for about a third of sales. The company makes its wood products at more than a dozen plants in Europe and nine in the US. It purchased Swedish laminate flooring maker Pergo for about €300 million in 2007. The following year, JPMorgan Chase affiliate One Equity Partners acquired control of Pfleiderer. To read the full description, subscribe now.

Competition

Competitive Landscape for Pfleiderer AG
Demand is closely tied to the level of home construction. The profitability of individual mills depends on efficient operations, because the products are commodities sold based on price. Large companies have big economies of scale in sawmill operations. Large mills can have annual revenue per employee of close to $300,000, while small mills may achieve only half as much. Local mills can often compete successfully with those of large companies because they can efficiently serve a local market. Sawmills can operate with only a modest investment of capital, but plywood mills require expensive equipment and therefore are usually plants with high annual volume. To read the full description, subscribe now.
