This link will open in a new window At a time when most investors are bailing on the US mortgage market, Petra Real Estate Opportunity Trust sees a golden opportunity. The real estate investment trust (REIT) formed in late 2007 by the owners of Petra Capital Management, a hedge fund. Petra Real Estate Opportunity Trust plans to invest in commercial mortgage loans and other real estate-related assets that generate risk-adjusted returns, such as first mortgage loans, commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS), secured and mezzanine loans, Class B Notes, and land and real estate synthetic securities. It foresees investments ranging from $20 million to $70 million, with maturities ranging from three to seven years. Petra filed an IPO in June 2008.
