The chain offers diamonds, gold and other fine jewelry, watches, and gifts at affordable prices from about 140 Peoples Jewellers stores and some 70 Mappins locations in nine Canadian provinces. Most stores are located in shopping malls and average about 1,600 square feet. Purchases at Peoples and Mappins Jewellers stores average $303. Peoples mails a seasonal bridal book to customers twice a year. Founded in 1919 as a family business, Peoples Jewellers was acquired by Texas-based Zale in 1999 and accounts for about 15% of its parent company's sales.
