Formerly known as Necchi, the company was up to its neck in debt and is now up to its neck in changes. Necchi was known for its consumer and industrial sewing machines, used to produce everything from clothes and shoes to home furnishings and boat sails. Shareholders voted to change the company name to Partecipazioni Italiane (also called Part-Italiane, or PI) when the company combined with Italian financial holding company Bormioli Finanziaria, which owns Bormioli Rocco e Figlio SpA, a well-known glass manufacturer.
