OPERS' opus is retirement planning. Founded in 1935, the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), manages retirement and health care benefits for more than 930,000 Buckeye State employees and their beneficiaries; less than half are active members. Approximately 3,700 public employers participate in the system, including the state of Ohio, county and municipal governments, health departments, park and conservancy districts, and elected officials. OPERS has about $60 billion of assets under management: some $50 million in a pension fund, and the remainder in a health care fund. It distributes around $3 billion of pension benefits annually.
