It funnels money through state agencies and local school districts to help children and youth with disabilities get a better education. The funds support research, special displays, technical assistance, technology, and parent-training and information centers. OSEP's mandate comes from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004, or IDEA, which serves more than 6.5 million disabled children and youth.
