This link will open in a new window Nyrstar is hoping to take the world (of zinc) by storm. The company already claims to be #1 in the global zinc market. It specializes in smelting concentrated zinc into alloys that are then used for die-casting toys, locks, and zippers and for galvanizing steel in cars, buildings, and bridges to protect them from rust. It also produces lead that is sold and used in batteries. Formed in 2007 as a joint venture between Umicore and Zinifex , Nyrstar processes more than one million tonnes of zinc per year, with more than half of its global production sold to Europe.
