The company acquired and managed ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) across the US. It operated about 40 centers that primarily offered ophthalmologic surgery such as cataract and refractive eye surgery and laser vision correction (LASIK and other procedures); it also offered orthopedic, pain management, plastic surgery, and other outpatient surgeries. NovaMed also rented optical equipment and operated optical labs (contact and eyeglass lens finishing services) and a group purchasing organization. Private ASC operator Surgery Center Holdings (Surgery Partners) acquired NovaMed in 2011.
