Company Description

Sweet! Nordzucker ("north sugar") is Germany's second-largest sugar refiner (behind Südzucker, or "south sugar.") It produces about 1.6 million tons of sugar a year made from beets (as opposed to sugarcane) at its 15 plants in Germany and Eastern Europe. Through its sugar-marketing joint venture, Eurosugar, about 80% of the company's sugar is sold to the European food industry. About 15% is sold under the SweetFamily brand, and the remaining by-product is sold as animal feed, molasses, and food for bees. Nordzucker has diversified its sugar production to include the manufacture of renewable energy in the form of ethanol and biogas and has a joint venture with PureCircle to develop stevia-based sweeteners.
