Norbord is one company that won't get lost in the woods. Norbord is one of the world's largest producers of oriented strand board (OSB), which accounts for about two-thirds of the company's sales. Other wooden homebuilding products made by the company include fibreboard, particleboard, and hardwood plywood. Norbord, which has operations in the US, Canada, and Europe, has about 17 mills and one furniture plant. Eleven of those mills support an annual OSB production capacity of 5 billion sq. ft. The company in 2004 spun off its paper operations into publicly traded Fraser Paper; at the same time the company (then called Nexfor) adopted the Norbord name. Brookfield Asset Management owns nearly 40% of Norbord. To read the full description, subscribe now.

Competition

Competitive Landscape for Norbord Inc.
Demand is closely tied to the level of home construction. The profitability of individual mills depends on efficient operations, because the products are commodities sold based on price. Large companies have big economies of scale in sawmill operations. Large mills can have annual revenue per employee of close to $300,000, while small mills may achieve only half as much. Local mills can often compete successfully with those of large companies because they can efficiently serve a local market. Sawmills can operate with only a modest investment of capital, but plywood mills require expensive equipment and therefore are usually plants with high annual volume. To read the full description, subscribe now.
