NL Industries is looking to paint a bright future. The company owns 30% of Kronos Worldwide, one of the world's largest suppliers of titanium dioxide (TiO₂), which maximizes the whiteness, opacity, and brightness of paints, plastics, paper, fibers, and ceramics. Kronos produces more than 40 different grades of titanium dioxide. Majority-owned (87%) subsidiary CompX makes components such as security products (locking systems), ball bearing slides, and ergonomic computer support systems. Valhi, which is 94%-owned by Contran Corporation, in turn owns 83% of NL Industries. Through trusts, billionaire Harold C. Simmons controls Contran, Valhi, and NL Industries.
