New York City Transit Authority has your ticket to ride in the Big Apple. Known as MTA New York City Transit, it provides subway and bus transportation throughout New York City's five boroughs. It is the primary agency of the MTA and the largest public transportation system in North America. Its subway system -- which includes 6,300 subway cars, 468 stations, and 660 miles of track -- serves more than 5 million passengers a day. Its 5,900 buses cover 280 routes and transport some 2.7 million riders each day. The agency also operates the Staten Island Railway system. New York City Transit Authority was formed in the 1950s by New York's legislature; the city's transit system dates back to the early 1900s.
