A unit of state-owned public transportation provider New Jersey Transit, New Jersey Transit Bus Operations runs about 240 bus routes throughout the Garden State. The company operates more than 2,000 buses and plans to spend about $44 million to replace about 1,400 buses in its fleet. The agency received about $3 million in federal money to improve bus service including a new rapid bus service called Go Bus. New Jersey Transit acquired several privately owned bus companies in the 1980s and merged them into New Jersey Transit Bus Operations. Other New Jersey Transit units include New Jersey Transit Rail and New Jersey Transit Mercer, which provides bus service in the Trenton/Mercer County area.
