Network Rail has taken charge of the UK's rail infrastructure. The company, through subsidiary Network Rail Infrastructure, owns, manages, and maintains 21,000 miles of track and 40,000 bridges and tunnels in the UK. Network Rail owns the nation's 2,500 railway stations but manages only the 17 largest; the rest of the stations are managed by train operating companies, which provide passenger rail service.
