The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is the primary federal agency tasked with investigating every civil aviation accident in the US as well as other significant transportation accidents. Opened in 1967, the NTSB investigates civil aviation accidents, some public-use aircraft accidents, selected highway accidents, railroad accidents resulting in a fatality or major property damage, major marine accidents, pipeline accidents involving a fatality or major property damage, hazardous material releases, and recurring transportation accidents.
