The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) was set up in 1988 to regulate gaming activities on Indian lands. NIGC primarily shields tribes from organized crime and corruption, ensures that tribes are the main recipients of gaming revenue, and works to assure fair and honest gaming operations. The commission conducts investigations and undertakes enforcement actions when necessary to regulate Indian tribe gaming. NIGC is comprised of a President-appointed chairman and two commissioners appointed by the Secretary of the Interior.
