Company Description

National Coal's nation is Appalachian. The company operates mines in Alabama and Tennessee, part of the coal-producing region designated in the industry as central and southern Appalachia. National Coal's production has grown greatly in the latter half of this decade, up to about 1.5 million tons. It controls about 30 million tons of proved and probable reserves and sells primarily to utilities but also to industrial customers.Three companies account for about two-thirds of National Coal's sales: South Carolina Public Service Authority (24%), Georgia Power (23%), and Duke Energy Carolinas (18%).  In 2010 Ranger Energy acquired National Coal in an $8.6 million deal, and operates it as a wholly owned subsidiary.
