Established in 1880, National Bank of Romania (NBR) serves as the central bank for Romania and is the only entity in the country authorized to distribute and issue legal tender. (In Romania, the currency is measured with the paper leu and the coin ban). The bank is responsible for overseeing and regulating credit institutions, maintaining the exchange rate, and managing the official reserves. It also closely monitors inflation and financial stability. Operating some 20 branches throughout the country, NBR is controlled by a board of nine directors appointed by Romania's parliament.
