The not-for-profit organization offers educational programs and professional development services to more than 1,200 members, who include both women and men, attorneys, law clerks, and judges at all levels, from tribal to federal. NAWJ holds national conferences to encourage professional networking, promotes diversity in hiring at law firms, offers law career training and scholarships to students, and provides legislative advocacy on behalf of women in prison and other underrepresented groups. NAWJ was established in 1979 and is a founder of the larger International Association of Women Judges.
