NL Industries is looking to paint a bright future. The company owns 30% of  Kronos Worldwide, one of the world's largest suppliers of titanium dioxide (TiO2), which maximizes the whiteness, opacity, and brightness of paints, plastics, paper, fibers, and ceramics. Kronos produces more than 40 different grades of titanium dioxide. Majority-owned (87%) subsidiary CompX makes components such as security products (locking systems), ball bearing slides, and ergonomic computer support systems. Valhi, which is 94%-owned by Contran Corporation, in turn owns 83% of NL Industries. Through trusts, billionaire Harold C. Simmons controls Contran, Valhi, and NL Industries.
