Company Description
Microsoft may have won the "browser wars" of the 1990s with its Internet Explorer application, but Mozilla's Firefox Web browser continues to nip persistently at the software giant's heels. Microsoft remains the dominant supplier with about 60% market share, but Firefox's popularity has continued to grow since its release in 2004, gaining more than 20% of the market despite a comparatively tiny, mainly word of mouth marketing effort. The Mozilla Foundation was created in 2003 to carry on the open-source development work of the mozilla.org project (spun off from Netscape in 1998). Subsidiary Mozilla Corporation (a for-profit business spun off in 2005) oversees product development, marketing, and distribution.
