Mirant (pronounced MEER-uhnt) was trying to keep up its energy levels during difficult times. Once a global power player, the company is had shifted its focus to being a top North American wholesale energy marketer. Mirant owned or leased more than 10,000 MW of electric generating capacity located in markets in the Mid-Atlantic (5,194 MW), Northeast (2,535 MW), and California (2,347 MW). In addition to selling the electricity it produced and bought the fuel and emissions allowances it needs to produce electricity, Mirant also traded some power, fuel, and emissions allowances as part of its trading and fuel oil management activities.
