In some cases, Mindspeed Technologies' chips work even faster than human synapses. Mindspeed makes a variety of semiconductors -- including network processors, DSL transceivers, and fiber-optic components -- for use in networking equipment, such as optical switches and high-speed routers and multiplexers. Mindspeed sells its chips to such makers of networking and telecommunications gear as Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems, Huawei, Mitsubishi Electric, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel Networks, Samsung Electronics, and ZTE Corp. Asian customers are behind more than half of sales.
