For students at the Milton Hershey School, receiving a quality education is very sweet, indeed. Founded in 1909 by chocolate mogul Milton S. Hershey and his wife Catherine, the Milton Hershey School is a residential private school for low-income children. About 1,800 students -- from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade -- are enrolled; more than three-quarters are from Pennsylvania, and the remainder hail from around 30 other states. The school has a student-teacher ratio of about 7:1. Applicants must demonstrate social and financial need. Students attend school, live in one of the campus's residences under the guidance of houseparents, receive health care services, and much more, free of charge.
