From the tiniest newborns to the most anarchic adolescents, Miami Children's Hospital is thinking of the children. The not-for-profit medical center has nearly 300 beds and offers more than 40 different health care specialties, including pediatric emergency care, cancer treatment, orthopedics, and rehabilitation services. The hospital's neonatal unit treats newborns referred from other hospitals. Miami Children's Hospital has a staff of some 650 physicians and operates the region's only free-standing pediatric trauma center. The hospital first opened its doors in the 1940s as Miami Tent #33 of Variety Clubs International. Variety Children's Hospital opened in 1950 and became Miami Children's Hospital in 1986.
