Metrovacesa rules Spain when it comes to real estate. Spain's top rental property company, Metrovacesa develops and leases residential, retail, and office space in Spain, Germany, and France (partly through subsidiary Gecina), and has a property portfolio worth some €11 billion. The firm also develops and sells apartments, shopping centers, parking lots, and other property. Metrovacesa operates hotels that are managed by companies such as Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza. Primary tenants include Alstom, Repsol YPF and Peugeot. A tough Spanish real estate market and global economic troubles impacted Metrovacesa negatively. In 2009 it instituted a plan to reduce costs and sell underperforming assets.
