The largest public transportation system in the US, the government-owned MTA provides about 2.6 billion passenger trips and more than 300 million vehicles travel the MTA system annually. The MTA's New York City Transit Authority runs a fleet of some 6,300 buses in New York's five boroughs, and with about 8,900 rail and subway cars, it provides subway service to all but Staten Island and operates the Staten Island Railway.
